The shelter at MTSU’s campus recreation center is taking in Gulf Coast residents evacuating the region due to Hurricane Gustav.

The Lee County Chapter of the Red Cross opened the county’s first disaster relief shelter at Covington Recreation Center on Carver Avenue in Opelika noon Sunday in preparation for evacuees from Hurricane Gustav.

ATLANTA – With Hurricane Gustav headed for the Gulf Coast, two evacuation centers are now open in Georgia. The Georgia Emergency Management Agency says the First Baptist Church in Lagrange and the Gold Dust Recreation Center in Villa Rica will house evacuees.

St. Louis area officials are preparing to shelter up to 600 people fleeing Hurricane Gustav as it approaches Louisiana. The local chapter of the American Red Cross is preparing a temporary shelter at the St. Louis County Recreation Center, 2577 Redman Rd., in North County.
